How Tyler Marsh stole from Becky Hammon to shock Aces in final seconds

The Chicago Sky have found something in rookie Sydney Taylor. Chicago’s sensational rookie scored a game-winning 3-point shot in the final seconds, giving them a huge victory of Las Vegas. One interesting wrinkle about that incredible play makes the story even more incredible.

ESPN’s Kareem Copeland explained how head coach Tyler Marsh stole from Becky Hammon to secure the game-winning shot.

“Marsh was an assistant with the Aces for three seasons before being hired by the Sky,” Copeland wrote. “The final inbounds play for the game-winning basket was used by Aces coach Becky Hammon during a 2022 practice, Marsh explained, and he’s held onto it since.”

Chicago had two opportunities to ice the game late in the fourth quarter. Taylor missed a floater with 7.6 second left and the score tied at 81. But Taylor nailed a catch-and-shoot 3-pointer to secure the 84-83 victory.

After the game, Taylor declared that her game-winning shot is one of the biggest moments of her career. It should be a moment she can build off  in the future.

“It’s been a really long journey, and for me to step up and hit — that’s probably one of the biggest shots of my career in my life,” Taylor said. “So, I’m just grateful for that.”

Taylor finished the game with 29 points, two rebounds, and two assists. She led the Sky in scoring by a wide margin, with Natasha Cloud next in line with just 11 points. Chicago also got 10 points from DiJonai Carrington off the bench in her second game of the season.

Chicago may have some hope for the future if Taylor continues to play well during her rookie season.
