How the NFL’s schedule is disrupted with FIFA World Cup takeover

With just a little bit over 50 days remaining for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, a major opening ceremony as well as the inaugural match is set to take place on Jun.11, 2026, between Mexico and South Africa. Final preparations are being made at well-known stadiums such as Estadio Azteca in Mexico City and SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, preparing them for the World Cup.

However, FIFA World Cup’s takeover has been significantly felt by the New York Giants and New York Jets. Typically, both football giants hold their NFL Draft fan parties at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. However, the Sports Business Journal indicates that the venue is presently unavailable to the NFL, as FIFA teams have started the installation of the natural grass pitch necessary for international competition.

As a result of this, both teams will be taking their draft celebrations to the streets of Manhattan. While the Jets will host its fans at the South Street Seaport, the Giants will be at. Hudson Yards for the Draft Night Block Party.

This was a “forced move” due to the 30-day exclusive use period that will give FIFA total control over the stadiums starting from mid-May 2026. For operations teams, this is a major shift, as they need to vacate their home stadiums until late Jul, 2026, before the NFL Training Camp.

The following 13 NFL teams have been affected by the 2026 FIFA World Cup: Dallas Cowboys, New York Jets, New York Giants, Atlanta Falcons, Kansas City Chiefs, Houston Texans, San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Chargers, Los Angeles Rams, Philadelphia Eagles, Seattle Seahawks, New England Patriots, and Miami Dolphins.
