How Rory McIlroy truly feels about LIV Golfers returning to PGA Tour

Rory McIlroy has significantly softened his stance on LIV Golf players potentially returning to the PGA Tour. Speaking at the Truist Championship in Charlotte, Mcilroy made it clear that the issue is no longer whether players should be allowed back.

Instead, it was about whether those players even want to return given the uncertainty surrounding LIV Golf’s future and the contracts many players still hold. McIlroy, however, said that LIV was not for him, per ESPN.

“If it is a scenario where they have the option to come back and play on the traditional tours, I think [PGA Tour CEO] Brian Rolapp has said anything that makes this tour stronger, anything that makes the DP World Tour stronger, I think everyone should be open to that. That’s just good business practice,” he said.

Only recently, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund reportedly decided to stop future funding for LIV Golf beyond 2026. However, the world No. 1 now appears much more flexible after previously being one of LIV Golf’s harshest critics.

“They’re going to go and try and find alternative investment, whatever that may look like. But when one of the wealthiest sovereign wealth funds in the world thinks that you’re too expensive for them, that sort of says something,” he said.

McIlroy went on to claim that he was probably a bit too “harsh” on LIV players previously.

“Obviously, the guys over there are under contract, and if they are able to keep it going and get a schedule together next year, it seems like those guys are still going to play the majority of their golf on LIV, in whatever form it takes.”

Of course, McIlroy could not help but claim that the PGA Tour was the “place to be” for professional golfers.

“And if you don’t want to play here, I think that says something about you,” he said.
