QPR vs Millwall prediction
QPR head coach Julian Stephan says he is not preparing for the season opener in the Carabao Cup against Millwall any differently than if it were a league game.
In a break from tradition, the campaign will not begin with the opening Championship game, which will be away to Portsmouth on August 15.
But Stephan said the season start will be a huge occasion either way.
“I don’t make any distinction between league and cup. It is just a competitive game.
“We need to have that mindset immediately. We know if we win we go through, lose and we wait a year for another game in the Carabao Cup.
“It is a restart of the competition. I don’t care if it is FA Cup, Carabao Cup or league.”
That should tell you the type of game the QPR boss expects and the expectations set on his own squad for the coming campaign against a Championship rival, regardless of the competition.
The R’s will clash one of the best teams in the second tier last season, who narrowly missed out on automatic promotion, before being beaten by eventual playoff winners Hull City over two-legs.
Millwall have added one of the most promising wingers in the EFL last season, in Peterborough Utd’s Kyrell Lisbie to bolster their attacking options.
They’ve managed to keep hold of prolific winger Femi Azeez and he could do some damage in the score/assist market.
QPR vs Millwall best bets
Azeez on target
Azeez scored 11 goals and bagged eight assists last season. A real breakout year for the 24-year-old who has drawn admirers from the Premier League and beyond.
With rumours of Hull City sniffing around, this may well be his only game in a Millwall shirt this season. But his quality should shine through again if he can get opportunities in front of goal.
Millwall to edge out R’s
Both matches last season were won by The Lions as they had their best campaign in over 30 years, finishing third in the second-tier.
They’ve kept hold of some of their stars like Azeez, Josh Coburn as well as defenders Tristan Crama and Jake Cooper.
It may be a cagey game at Loftus Road that is won by the odd goal. And we’re backing Millwall to come out on top.
