These two sides haven’t played against each other since 2011 in League One, where they played each other in the 2009/10 and 2010/11 seasons in the third tier.

They faced each just nine times since October 2004, where Southampton beat them 3-2 in the EFL Cup Round 3.

The Saints have therefore beaten Colchester in their most recent clash and furthest game away. Between then it’s all been draws and Colchester coming out on top.

Since 2011 of course the gap between them has widened and now face-off while Colchester are in League Two and Southampton are in the Championship consistently trying to get back into the Premier League.

Southampton looking for redemption

Southampton could well have got into the Premier League last year after they famously were kicked out of the Play-Off Final in May following the controversial decision to send someone to keep an eye on Middlesbrough’s training.

The Spygate fiasco meant the club and head coach Tonda Eckert were hit by the FA.

The club admitted three spying charges resulting in being docked four points for the new 2026/27 season along with play-off expulsion.

The manager has also been charged with misconduct by the Football Association, and they will be looking to make the most of a tough season ahead after a difficult summer coming to terms with what could have been.

They are huge favourites though as a Premier League-pushing side against a long-time League Two side.

Player bets

With Southampton such a heavy odds-on price to win it doesn’t make much sense to go all in on result bets, as such player bets are a solid way to increase the odds to bet builders.
