How Reds Manager Terry Francona is navigating pitching staff after Cardinals game rainout
The final game of the series between the Cincinnati Reds and the St. Louis Cardinals was rained out on Sunday. It was the second time in the series that a game between the Reds and Cardinals was impacted by weather. The two played a doubleheader on Saturday and were set to finish the series on Sunday.
Now, the game on Sunday will be made up as the first game of a split doubleheader on Monday, August 17. With so many schedule changes, decisions have to be made about the starting rotation. Terry Francona has made a decision, according to Charlie Goldsmith of FOX19.
“After the rainout today, the Reds are keeping the previously scheduled rotation for the series. Lodolo, Burns, Abbott, off day Thursday. Singer gets a turn through the rotation off,” Goldsmith posted on X, formerly Twitter.
Nick Lodolo will make his schedule start against the New York Mets on Monday afternoon, while Chase Burns and Andrew Abbott finish out the series. Lodolo has made just three starts this year, going 0-1 with a 7.20 ERA. Meanwhile, Burns has been the best pitcher this season. He is 6-1 with a 1.83 ERA. Abbott has been solid, going 4-2 with a 3.97 ERA.
Meanwhile, Brady Singer has not made a start since May 17. He went just four innings in that game and took the loss after giving up five runs. He is just 2-4 with a 6.26 ERA so far this year.
The Reds may need this reset to the rotation. They are currently 25th in the majors in team ERA. The Reds are 27-25 on the season, placing them in fourth in the NL Central. They open their three-game set on Monday with the Mets.
