Here’s the proof the wind absolutely hates the Cubs’ Ian Happ with a passion
Ian Happ went viral for taking advantage of a big Cincinnati Reds miscue one week ago. But the Chicago Cubs left fielder trended for a different reason Sunday: Because the winds of the Windy City weren’t on his side against the White Sox in the 9-8 defeat.
Happ got robbed of a home run. But not because an outfielder stretched his arm to snatch the baseball. Instead mother nature provided the Sox with a rare assist during this third inning flyout.
Windy City (yes ik the real origin)

This Ian Happ flyout was pushed in 137 ft by wind, preventing a home run, per @WeatherApplied
That’s the largest deviation preventing a HR in their database (2023),for anyone, surpassing…a 113-ft deviation for Happ earlier this year

In this case the White Sox had Chicago’s famed winds on their side. Turns out Happ struggled throughout the afternoon in attempting to gain a hit.
Happ took to the plate five different times, and never registered one hit. He only got on base once through taking a ball four. It’s now the second straight game that Happ hasn’t smacked the ball. That includes Saturday when the lights at Rate Field briefly went off.
The 31-year-old pounded two hits back on Friday to start the series against the White Sox. He delivered the same production versus the Atlanta Braves on Thursday. But now is currently on a personal hitting slump.
Meanwhile, manager Craig Counsell saw offensive explosion out of two notable Cubs stars amid Happ’s struggles. Michael Conforto ripped two hits during four at-bat attempts, driving three Cubs teammates home for the RBI. The designated hitter scored one solo run too.
Alex Bregman rose as a major hitting contributor too despite the loss, chipping two hits as well. He drove two runners home on his end. Michael Busch emerged as the last Cubs player to score two of his teammates.
