Grizzlies’ Ja Morant calls out haters for never giving him credit for helping people behind scenes

There have been numerous cautionary tales in the NBA. With the way his career has spiraled in recent years, many are concerned that Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant could become the latest one.

Morant was limited to just 20 games this season due to a calf injury and an elbow injury. In November, he was suspended by the Grizzlies after taking a shot at the coaching staff. In January, he had a heated altercation with then-teammate Vince Williams Jr. at practice in Germany.

Controversy has seemed to follow the 26-year-old guard, who was once arguably the most thrilling player in the NBA with his high-wire act and devil-may-care style.

Morant, however, implied that he is a victim of perception, as people do not see the side of him that is kind, helpful, and charitable.

“Behind closed doors, I’ve done a lot for people. Real help, real support, no cameras, no credit,” wrote the two-time All-Star on his Instagram Story, as shared by ESPN’s Mark Jones on Bluesky.

“So when my name comes up, don’t just run with whatever story (that) sounds good. Tell that part too! Tell how I showed up when I didn’t have to. Tell how I poured into people who couldn’t pour back. Tell how I stayed solid, even when it wasn’t returned. Y’all be quick to speak on the surface, but quiet about what really went on. Keep it real all the way or don’t say my name at all.”

It is unclear what prompted Morant’s post.

He has a foundation named after him that focuses on aiding the youth and underprivileged communities. In March, he donated $15,000 to an 11-year-old boy hit by a car in Tennessee.

Many thought that the Grizzlies would part ways with Morant at the trade deadline, but the team decided to stay pat. It is believed that Memphis is looking to finally move on from the former Rookie of the Year in the offseason and undergo a complete rebuild.
