Greg Sankey drops hammer on CFP, SEC Championship Game drama

There continues to be chatter in the NCAA football world about possible changes coming to the College Football Playoff. The CFP is in a constant state of flux, as the expanded playoff has only been around a few years. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey is not making any endorsements right now of another expansion to the CFP.

“I do not anticipate any decisions on a College Football Playoff,” Sankey said, per Yahoo Sports, in his news conference Monday as SEC meetings are about to begin.

The SEC and the Big Ten currently have a lot of sway in NCAA football. Big Ten officials have reportedly floated the idea of expanding the CFP from 12 teams to as many as 16.

“They (the Big Ten) brought 16 to the table right when we were meeting last year. All those 16 ideas, they weren’t ours,” Sankey said about the Big Ten, per NBC Sports.

Sankey was also asked Monday about his league’s preference for how many teams should be able to compete in the CFP each year.

“I don’t think we’d have a unanimous vote right now,” Sankey said.

Sixteen teams in the CFP is just one proposal reportedly being discussed. Another proposal NCAA officials are rumored to be looking at is a 24-team playoff. That could have heavy implications on conference championship games, like the SEC title contest.

The SEC commissioner was asked by reporters Monday about his stance on his conference title game. It is believed that if the CFP expands, then those games would have to be eliminated.

“We have contracts, so pretty committed,” Sankey said.

Nonetheless, CFP commissioners are taking a look at getting a field of 24 teams for the future, Ross Dellenger reported for Yahoo. Time will tell if the CFP expands anytime soon.
