Graeme Souness has documented being stranded in Abu Dhabi on his social media amid air strikes in the Middle East.

Counter strikes from Iran in reaction to a joint attack by the United States and Israel led to many flights in the region being cancelled on Saturday.

Thousands of expats and holidaymakers have been caught up in the conflict, with Liverpool legend Souness among them.

Taking to his Instagram stories, he showed his surroundings and what the situation is like in the United Arab Emirates.

Souness gives update from airport

He said: “I’m currently in the Middle East, in Abu Dhabi airport. I’ll give you a little quick glimpse where I am.

“That is my plane that I am meant to be catching to go back to the UK. Now my mum said to me…

“Bare with me, my mum said to me when I was a little boy, ‘Wherever you are son, there’s never a dull moment.’

“So I was thinking this weekend, the biggest game of the season for me, the Rangers vs Celtic game, a game that if Rangers win they’ll put the cat amongst the pigeons big style.

“Anyway, my mum said to me, ‘Wherever you are son, there’s never a dull moment.’

“Well right now, I’m at this airport, I’m hearing some pretty loud bangs going off, and that is anti-missiles taking out missiles being fired at some American base.”

In a follow-up video, he remarked: “The chaos continues, flight’s been cancelled, still hearing explosions, so we’ve given up.

“We’re just going to check into our hotel for a couple of nights and see where we are.

“Hopefully things will settle down and we’ll get back on our flight.

“You get grumpy, well I do, when you get delays and stuff at airports.

“But I think we should think of people that at this time are dying. Anyway, I’ll keep you posted.”

Fellow broadcaster Richard Keys was taken off air at beIN SPORTS when explosions were heard in Qatar.

The UK Foreign Office have told British nationals in the UAE, as well as Bahrain, Qatar and Kuwait, to shelter in place amid explosions.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has confirmed that he has spoken to US President Donald Trump following the strikes.
