Gilbert Arenas bashes Jonathan Kuminga’s Timberwolves decision
Jonathan Kuminga bet on flexibility when he chose the Minnesota Timberwolves. Gilbert Arenas believes the free agent may have sacrificed far too much to make that bet.
Kuminga agreed to a two-year contract worth $12.4 million, with a player option for the second year. Minnesota presented him with an opportunity to start beside Anthony Edwards, LaMelo Ball, Jaden McDaniels, and Rudy Gobert while competing in the Western Conference.
That vision convinced Kuminga to reject interest from the Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls, and Portland Trail Blazers. The Lakers reportedly offered more than $12 million per season across three years through a potential sign-and-trade. Kuminga instead selected a shorter arrangement that could return him to free agency next summer.

Gilbert Arenas Questions Kuminga’s Contract
Arenas could not understand why Kuminga accepted such a modest salary and mocked the agreement in a video posted to X.
“This man Just signed a podcast Deal,” Arenas wrote before claiming he could present Kuminga with a better offer. The former NBA guard even proposed a “Kuminga Arena” partnership on his Gil’s Arena show and jokingly asked Playmaker to meet him at Kuminga’s home with its checkbook.
Minnesota invested effort into landing the sixth-year wing. Edwards participated in the recruiting campaign, while team president Tim Connelly traveled to Miami for a four-hour meeting with Kuminga. The forward also spoke with coach Chris Finch as the Timberwolves offered their taxpayer midlevel exception and a role.
The franchise must now create the necessary roster space. Minnesota can pursue a trade involving reserve wing Josh Green or waive and stretch his contract before Saturday’s deadline.
Kuminga clearly prioritized opportunity and future control over long-term security. Arenas, however, sees a player accepting podcast money for an NBA starting job.
