Giants’ Willy Adames starts Cubs series with a bang with 2-run homer
On a two-game win streak, the San Francisco Giants traveled to Wrigley Field on Friday for a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs. Shortstop Willy Adames made sure the series started off in style.
On a 2-2 count and with a runner on second, Adames drove a ball to deep left field. As soon as Ian Happ looked up, he knew the ball was gone, via the MLB’s X, formerly Twitter account.

Heading into Friday’s matchup, Adames was hitting .244 with nine home runs and 25 RBIs. He ranks second on the team in home runs and third and RBIs.
The Giants are well aware of the shortstop’s power stroke at this stage of his career. He has at least 24 the last four seasons, with 30+ in three of those years. His entire nine-year MLB journey has resulted in a .244 batting average with 189 home runs and 584 RBIs.
While he can’t do it all on his own, San Francisco will hope Adames’ latest slam sparks a lineup-wide surge. The Giants entered Friday ranked 23rd in the league with 252 runs scored. Their 59 home runs were tied for the sixth-fewest. There are some signs of life, as San Francisco is tied for third-best batting average in the league at .256. Furthermore, they rank 22nd in strikeouts with 497.
Still, the Giants are 15 games back of the NL East lead with their 25-38 record. They’re 8.5 back of a Wild Card spot. They’ll need plenty of more Adames home runs to get back in the hunt.
But at least on Friday they did see their shortstop leave the yard. The Giants will now try to translate that first inning home run into a win.
