Giants rumors: Insider makes free agency prediction after Dexter Lawrence trade

After the New York Giants traded star defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence to the Cincinnati Bengals, the team would get back major draft assets, but now the team is looking to try to fill in the void in the trenches. With the Giants preparing for the NFL Draft, this league insider would predict what the team is looking to do in free agency.

There’s no denying it came as a surprise to some when New York traded Lawrence to the Bengals, though in some ways, it made sense for both teams. Cincinnati would get a big piece that was needed to further fix a lowly defense, while the Giants would get compensation, like the 10th overall pick in the first round of the NFL Draft, and the worry subsided of not having to pay a big contract extension.

However, New York is not done making moves after trading Lawrence.

Where the Giants are looking to address

According to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports, he would talk about the transition from teams not wanting to sign veterans until after the NFL Draft is complete. When speaking about the Giants, Jones would say how he has the expectation of the team picking up a “veteran defensive tackle.”

“More teams have been considering the compensatory pick formula in recent years, and that is the main reason why you won’t see teams signing free agents until after the draft. Players and agents are aware of this. Once the third or so wave of free agency passes, there’s little interest in teams signing veterans until after the draft, when those signings don’t figure into the comp pick formula,” Jones wrote on Thursday.

“This is where I would expect the Giants to sign a veteran defensive tackle. Perhaps the Texans add a running back after this weekend. Players like receiver Deebo Samuel, tight end David Njoku, and rusher Joey Bosa could also find new homes next week,” Jones continued.

At any rate, it remains to be seen how New York addresses the defensive line position after the blockbuster trade that involved Lawrence to the Bengals.
