Giants’ Casey Schmitt smokes lead-off home run vs. Brewers

The San Francisco Giants needed an immediate spark Thursday, and Casey Schmitt supplied it before the Milwaukee Brewers could record an out. The Giants infielder opened the finale of a four-game set at American Family Field by turning the first pitch into a leadoff home run.

Schmitt jumped on Coleman Crow’s opening pitch and drove it to left-center field, giving the Giants an immediate 1-0 lead. For a lineup that had spent much of the series searching for traction, the aggressive swing gave the Giants exactly the kind of early offense they needed.

The context made it stand out. The Brewers routed San Francisco 16-2 in Monday’s opener and 8-3 on Tuesday before the Giants answered with a 1-0 win Wednesday. Schmitt’s homer gave them another quick response with a chance to salvage the four-game series.

The blast was the Giants slugger’s 13th of the 2026 season, already moving him past his 2025 total of 12. It also offered another sign of how his power has become a larger part of San Francisco’s offense after he opened the year as a flexible designated hitter and third-base option.

MLB shared the highlight Thursday on X, formerly Twitter, posting video of the 27-year-old slugger launching the first pitch of the afternoon over the wall for a quick lead.

The blast also put immediate pressure on Crow. Instead of easing into the start, the Milwaukee right-hander had to pitch from behind before recording his first out.

Schmitt’s swing continued his breakout arc and gave his club another source of thump during a tough offensive stretch.

For the Giants, one swing did not erase every lineup concern. Still, Schmitt gave them the opening statement they needed against a first-place Brewers club on the road.
