Giannis Antetokounmpo will lead Heat to 48 wins, 1st round of 2027 NBA playoffs after blockbuster Bucks trade

On Monday evening, the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade sweepstakes finally ended when the Milwaukee Bucks traded the star to the Miami Heat in exchange for a package centered around Tyler Herro and draft compensation. The Heat have finally landed a big star for the first time since signing Jimmy Butler seven years ago, and will now look to re-enter the mix in the Eastern Conference after three straight down years.

Still, despite landing one of the top five players in the game, the Heat still appear to be quite a ways away from legit contention in the East. The most glaring issue with this roster is the lack of perimeter shot creation, especially considering the fact that Norman Powell appears unlikely to be back with the team next year, and had already started to fall off dramatically by the end of last season.

While Davion Mitchell has improved his three-point shooting, he is not necessarily a starting-caliber floor general in the NBA, and Pelle Larson and Andrew Wiggins are also not exactly known for being able to put the ball on the floor and make plays for their teammates consistently. Antetokounmpo will be able to handle some of this workload, and Bam Adebayo’s improvement as a three-point shooter should help space the floor. Still, Giannis’ early Bucks team frequently failed in the playoffs due to the team’s lack of a perimeter playmaker who could close games, and right now, Miami doesn’t have anything close to that on the roster.

Additionally, Antetokounmpo’s health has been a major concern in recent years, and it’s certainly worth considering how that will factor into Miami’s win total next year, along with the fact that the Heat gutted almost all of their bench depth in order to pull off this move, and don’t have a ton of ways to add premium talent in free agency.

Combine these concerns with the fact that the East is clearly the deeper conference at this point in time, with teams like the New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Boston Celtics, Indiana Pacers, Detroit Pistons, Orlando Magic, Atlanta Hawks, Toronto Raptors, and more all feeling like they have a legit chance of competing next year. Only four of those teams will make the second round of the playoffs, and at this point, it’s hard to envision the Heat being one of them, despite their blockbuster acquisition of Antetokounmpo.
