Gervonta Davis changes trainers ahead of return as team reaches out to Devin Haney
Gervonta Davis is switching things up ahead of his return to the ring.
A chunk of his 16 months on the sidelines has reportedly been spent training with Jose Benavidez Sr, father and coach of unified cruiserweight and WBC light heavyweight champion David Benavidez.

According to boxing insider Abraham Gonzalez of FightsATW, Davis and Benavidez Sr began training together a few weeks ago in South Florida to see if it was the right fit.
The pair meshed well, and Benavidez Sr has been asked to train Davis for his upcoming fight.
It remains to be seen what this means for ‘Tank’s’ longtime corner of Calvin Ford and Kenny Ellis, who have been working with the three-division champion since he was 7 years old.
If they are kept on, it is likely to be in a lesser capacity.
Gervonta Davis’ next fight
Davis’ next outing is expected to fall in early autumn.
His advisor, Al Haymon of PBC, is exercising caution around locking in an exact date amid the Baltimore boxer’s ongoing legal troubles.
Davis hasn’t set foot in the ring since his controversial draw with Lamont Roach in March 2025, which saw Roach wrongfully denied a knockdown in the ninth round.
‘Tank’ was ordered to defend his lightweight title against Floyd Schofield in May, but has shown little interest in pursuing the bout.
‘Kid Schofield’s’ father, Floyd Schofield Sr, has since come out and declared that the WBA intend to strip Davis, clearing the way for his son to face No.2-ranked Lucas Bahdi for the vacant strap.
Davis is, meanwhile, seemingly pursuing a bout with WBO welterweight champion Devin Haney.

Gervonta Davis’ team make contact with Devin Haney
Haney took to social media on Monday evening to write: “I think Gervonta grew some balls.. his team reached out!
“We might just end up fighting!”
If a fight is agreed upon, then it will open Haney up to the possibility of being stripped as well.
‘The Dream’ is set to be ordered to defend his 147lbs belt against top-ranked contender Keyshawn Davis in early July.
After Haney began going back and forth with Shakur Stevenson over a possible fight earlier this month, the WBO reminded Haney of his obligation to fight his soon-to-be mandatory.
Besides losing both of their world titles, there is also the small problem of agreeing on a weight for the bout.
Such an agreement would likely involve Haney coming down in weight, as Davis has not competed above super lightweight.
