Friday horse racing tips

Musselburgh

  • 14:20 – Barnaby Rudge 7/4 (1pt)
  • 16:24 – Much 3/1 (1pt)

Haydock

  • 18:53 – Casino Star 13/8 (1pt)

Newmarket

  • 19:12 – Spring Bloom 3/1 (1pt)

Barnaby Rudge

This looks to be a three-way go for the line in according to the odds between Faith In Florence, Barnaby Rudge and Minster Man.

Barnaby Rudge has drifted a touch in favour of Faith In Florence, going in from around 7/4 to now 11/8.

That might be the weights splitting opinion as the colt has to carry 13lb more than the now favoured filly, due to his 8lb penalty.

But to win the two races he did back to back in June was encouraging, and he did the latest when carrying more than the rest of the field.

He was half a length ahead of Hell Of A Spin and that horse has since gone on to win at Hamilton before placing third in at Goodwood Festival’s Molecomb Stakes so he should still be well-weighted to strike this afternoon.

Much

Form suggests he’s close in contention with Roc De Fer who beat him rather comfortably as the heavy odds-on favourite at Wolverhampton just last week.

But Roc De Fer goes from carrying just 5lb more than that rival to now carrying 11lb more and that could just be enough to help reerse the placings.

Much has yet to run over 1m5f but the extra furlong might be enough to eke out that little bit more from Roc De Fer who’s main form has come on the all-weather, not the turf.

Casino Star

Well if you liked Barnaby Rudge’s form and backing that horse it would be surprising if you didn’t also follow in Casino Star.

The two-year-old placed a neck second to Hell Of A Spin at Hamilton in maiden company in July, who of course went on to win at that race mentioned above at Goodwood.

Those form lines often tie in together but rarely so closely with horses racing in different races on the same day.

As such, if Barnaby Rudge wins in the earlier race then Casino Star may well be backed in more.

Spring Bloom

Billy Loughnane has a chance to extend his lead in the race for the Champion Jockey title this evening with plentiful rides on odds-on favourites.

Newmarket offers up a fair few races for younger stars with three two-year-old races kicking off the card.

Oisin Murphy is close in behind on betting rivals though and his current 11 win gap could certainly get wider or shortened after this evening’s races at Newmarket.

I’d like to avoid those uncertain two-year-olds though where there’s still plenty of question marks on the majority of runners.

Focusing on the later handicaps, there’s a lot more form to dig your teeth into.

The nine-year-old Spring Bloom has suddenly kicked in to form as he did at Newmarket in 2024, 2023 and 2022 around the same kind of time – more of a summer bloomer than a spring bloomer.

He’s a bit of a Newmarket veteran and specialist and appeals even with a 4lb penalty.
