It will be the first time either Australian has taken part in the South African competition. Notably, Marsh's SA20 franchise is owned by the same group that runs his Hundred side, Sunrisers Leeds.

When can Marsh and Short realistically join their SA20 sides?

The SA20 gets under way on January 17, 2027, the evening after Adelaide Strikers host Perth Scorchers in the final round of the BBL|16 regular season. Adding to the scheduling complexity, Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Pretoria Capitals are drawn to meet each other in that very opening fixture, played in Gqeberha, a destination that typically requires at least 20 hours of travel from Adelaide across multiple connecting flights.

Both players can only be considered for that opening match if their clubs are eliminated before the finals, which are scheduled to run from January 19 to 26. A Perth Scorchers spokesperson confirmed that Marsh would be with Perth until the season ends, whatever stage of the tournament that is. Marsh holds a contract with the reigning BBL champions through to the end of BBL|17, having signed a three-year extension in 2025, while Short is tied to the Strikers until 2028.

Tim David, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade, Ashton Turner and Mitch Owen have all represented SA20 franchises in recent seasons after completing their BBL duties, providing a clear precedent for this type of sequential release.

What form do Marsh and Short bring into these back-to-back competitions?

Marsh arrives with considerable momentum. During the previous BBL season, his 360 runs alongside Finn Allen, who topped the tournament with 466 runs, powered the Scorchers to a record-extending sixth men's title. He then produced 563 runs at an average of 43 for Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League and has since accumulated 290 runs across five innings for Sunrisers Leeds in the Hundred, though his T20 World Cup campaign was disrupted by injury.

Short has been equally prolific across formats. For Welsh Fire in the Hundred, he posted scores of 60 not out and 71 in successive innings. Before that, he closed out his Major League Cricket season with San Francisco in remarkable fashion, striking 94 not out and 121 not out in the playoffs on consecutive occasions.
