Gary Woodland shares genuine hope of Houston win’s impact

Gary Woodland is one of the best stories in golf today. His emotional win at the 2026 edition of the Houston Open at Memorial Park Golf Course in Houston gave a lot of people chills, as it came 30 months after he underwent brain surgery.

To merely compete at the Memorial Park, given what he went through, was a remarkable feat in itself, but the 41-year-old Gary Woodland did not stop there. He topped the field by shooting 21-under 259, five strokes better than the rest of the field to secure his first PGA Tour win since he raised the trophy at the 2019 US Open.

That US Open win is still the biggest single golf achievement in Woodland’s career, but his victory at the Houston Open means more to him in ways that go beyond golf.

“Winning the US Open in ’19 had the biggest impact in my life from a golf standpoint, there’s no doubt. I hope winning in Houston had a bigger impact in somebody else’s life,” Woodland told reporters ahead of the Masters Tournament, via Golf Channel.

Woodland wants his win at the Houston Open to serve as an inspiration to others facing their own battles.

“I hope somebody that’s struggling with something sees this guy out here fighting every day and still living his dream, and then they want to get up and fight and live their dream too. And I really, from the bottom, I hope that happens,” added Woodland, who has won five PGA Tour events in his career.

Woodland can be an even bigger inspiration if he could get a Green Jacket on Sunday.
