Came From Nowhere
I’m struggling to see any other angle for this race other than the favourite Came From Nowhere, but he’s got all the potential to bolt up here.
So much so his price of 7/4 and 15/8 in many bookies seems a little high, purely based on the fact he’s got a lot of potential still to find after winning two hurdles on the bounce.
He was set for a run at Cheltenham Festival and now runs a week later in a much weaker novice Class 3 contest.
He was upped 8lb for that latest impressive victory where he soundly beat a bunch of well-rated hurdlers.
The seven-year-old also only has to give away 4lb to Le Frimeur who could be anything but may also still need more experience.
Captain Bellamy
This horse’s form has worked out very well so far if you can ignore his latest run, which appears to mostly be down to the conditions/ground.
But his 2nd place finish here in December was just a short head behind Calimystic, who went on to win again boosting that contests form.
And back in a close fourth was Holloway Queen, the Cheltenham Festival Challenge Cup winner who benefitted massively from going further up in trip.
That’s incredibly strong form from that one run that’s worked out well from two other runners.
The cheekpieces go on today for the first time today too and he could be on a very handy mark.
Helnwein
It may be another favourite but it’s hard to ignore more Cheltenham Festival form that’s worked out so well.
He’s fresh too which could benefit more, with festival winning jockey Tom Bellamy on board who’s in fantastic form coming into this meeting.
Helnwein placed second behind Alexei in the Greatwood at Cheltenham in November before a respectable fifth when finishing behind Wilful, Hot Fuss, Alexei and Mondo Man.
Wilful went on to win the County Handicap Hurdle, Hot Fuss placed second in the Martin Pipe, and Alexei went into the Champion Hurdle and placed fourth behind Lossiemouth within just ten lengths.
Mondo Man has since gone on to win twice on soft ground over hurdles, beating Wreckless Eric in the Imperial Cup at Sandown earlier this month and is now upped 10lb to now be rated higher than Helnwein.
If the two were to race again, there’d be a huge swing in the weights, where Helnwein would go from giving away 10lb to now being given 1lb.
