Freddie Freeman breaks Dodgers’ scoreless streak with homer despite illness

Heading into Game 2 of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ series against the San Diego Padres, Dave Roberts broke the news that Freddie Freeman, his star first baseman and future Hall of Famer, had been feeling under the weather over the past few games.

Looking back at his stats over the past five games or so, this revelation makes sense, as Freeman only recorded one hit over 17 at-bats, but in the first inning of Tuesday’s contest, one wouldn’t have known it, as the pride of Villa Park went oppo to get his team on the board 2-0 with a huge home run.

Only the fifth home run of the season for the long-time Atlanta Braves batter, Freeman’s moonshot was impressive because it also ended the Dodgers’ scoreless streak, which dates back to the series finale against the Los Angeles Angels during rivalry weekend. After scoring 31 runs against an Angels team that might just be the worst in baseball, the Dodgers couldn’t get a single batter over home base in their first game against the Padres, even after star closer Mason Miller walked two batters on eight balls in the ninth.

Sitting at 29-19, the Dodgers currently trail the Padres in the NL West, but if they can win the series, they will go back on top with a 1.5 game lead. While a Manny Machado home run in the bottom of the 1st erased the lead Freeman created, if the 6-foot-4 slugger can do that while under the weather, his teammates should be able to pick up the slack behind starting pitcher Emmet Sheehan.
