Hull FC launch investigation amid MKM Stadium issues – just days before ground hosts Man United

Hull FC will investigate the technical issues which impacted Friday’s Super League clash against Castleford Tigers at the MKM Stadium.

The stadium’s big screens were unable to be used, barely a week before its first football action of the season: Hull City‘s Premier League opener against Manchester United on Saturday (August 22).

On Monday, Hull FC – who have shared the ground with Hull City since 2003 – released a statement on the situation.

It read: “The club can confirm it will launch a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding technical issues at the MKM Stadium on Friday evening during our Betfred Super League fixture against Castleford Tigers.

“Due to issues beyond the control of the club, the stadium’s two big screens were not able to be used during the match.

“The MKM Stadium’s match clock and shot clock were therefore both also unavailable during the match because of this.

“The club will be liaising with the Stadium Operations Team in the coming days to resolve this.

“We would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused to all supporters in attendance at the fixture.”

Hull FC were beaten 18-14 by Castleford and sit 12th in the Super League table with four games remaining this season.

Tigers ready to roar

Hull are gearing up for their top-flight return after nine years away.

The Tigers are back in the Premier League after winning last season’s Championship play-off final in dramatic fashion thanks to Oli McBurnie’s last-gasp goal against Middlesbrough.

And Sergej Jakirovic’s side have been very busy in the transfer market this summer as they target survival.

Midfielders Lucas Gourna-Douath and Joe Gelhardt are the latest new arrivals, joining from Red Bull Salzburg and Leeds United respectively

Hull have also broken their transfer record twice this window, first to sign Australia starlet Lucas Herrington then to bring in another centre-back, Senegal international Nobel Mendy.

Among the other players through the door at the MKM Stadium are Greece goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis and Sweden left-back Elliot Stroud.

Speaking ahead of May’s play-off final, Jakirovic said managing in the Premier League would mean the world to him – and now he has that opportunity.

“Managing in the Premier League would be everything to me,” he told The Athletic. “The best award in my coaching career.”

He later joked at the Tigers’ victory parade: “I have to say sorry. I was brought here with one job to do: keep Hull City in the Championship. I failed, because we are going to the Premier League.”

Hull have already seen two of their Premier League games, against Everton and Brentford, in October rescheduled.

Their clash with the Toffees, originally on Saturday, October 10, has now been moved to Sunday, October 11 at 2pm due to a clash with Hull Fair.

It’s almost time

The 2026/27 Premier League campaign is nearly upon us, kicking off this Friday night with Hull’s fellow newcomers Coventry City travelling to reigning champions Arsenal – live on talkSPORT.

Elsewhere across the opening weekend, Tottenham head to Brentford, Manchester City entertain Bournemouth, Newcastle host Liverpool and Chelsea are away to West London rivals Fulham.
