Frank Lampard makes Coventry transfer admission moments after lifting Championship title

Frank Lampard has admitted that Coventry City have to act quickly in the transfer market to avoid becoming a Premier League yo-yo club.

The Sky Blues boss stressed the massive challenge that awaits his side next season, after they beat Wrexham 3-1 to move onto 92 points in the Championship.

Goals from Brandon Thomas-Asante, Victor Torp, and Ephron Mason-Clark extended Coventry’s unbeaten run to seven matches.

It meant that the club were able to sign off their title-winning Championship campaign in front of their home fans with a win.

Coventry are 12 points clear of nearest challengers Ipswich Town, albeit having played a game more, and can still finish on 95 points.

However, that would still be five short of Burnley‘s century that Scott Parker‘s men recorded en route to becoming runners-up last season.

But 12 months later the Clarets are guaranteed to finish in the Premier League‘s bottom three for the second time in three years.

In all-but four of the 31 seasons since the top-flight’s revamp in 1992/93, at least one newly promoted team have been relegated.

All three promoted clubs completed instant Championship returns in successive years until Leeds and Sunderland stopped the rot.

As such, Lampard is refusing to rest on his laurels too much as attention turned to life in the Premier League after the title lift.

“It is a massive challenge, right?” the Coventry boss said to reporters, which included talkSPORT’s Joe Shennan, post-match.

“We see with the amount of teams that go up and come back down, it’s a big step, and to get any foothold in the Premier League is hard.”

Coventry’s promotion has meant one deal has already been completed, with loan star Frank Onyeka joining the club permanently and talkSPORT understands they’re looking to sign goalkeeping loanee Carl Rushworth on a permanent deal.

More is to come, with this year’s three promoted clubs, Sunderland, Leeds and Burnley spending a combined £300million last summer.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do,” Lampard continued. “We’ll do it quickly, and I think I feel like we have to do it quickly.

“It’s the owner’s choice [on] a lot of these things because he’s the boss man in the football club. But the conversations obviously have to happen quickly, but also enjoy this little moment.”

Asked whether there will be time for a break, Lampard added: “For sure. I can do many things at once. I’ll talk and holiday, not a problem.”

In the meantime, Lampard and his players are more than deserving of a celebration after ending their 25-year Premier League absence.

The Chelsea legend told talkSPORT’s Joe Shennan: “It’s amazing, right? This league’s so tough. We know that, lived it and this team, the boys have gone, and now they’ve dominated the season in terms of the points that they’ve racked up.

“The performance of today, it’s not easy, having got promoted against Blackburn, won the title against Portsmouth. Lads enjoyed themselves a bit after that.

“Then you ask them to go again against a team that are fighting for the playoffs and a strong team in this league, and again showed exactly what they’re about in front of our home fans.

“And it’s a special year crowned off and topped off at home with lifting a cup. Great, amazing.”

The epic Coventry celebrations even involved Stephen Bunting, with Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White also at the stadium.

The six-cap England international showed up in support of his ex-Lions teammate Joel Latibeaudiere, who now plays for Jamaica.

Coventry’s Latibeaudiere told The Sun: “Morgan was the first to text after our promotion was confirmed. I’m still very close with him.

“He’s always been in my corner and had a similar route, going through the Championship and getting promoted with Nottingham Forest.

“To see what he’s achieving now is great. He’s on fire, trying to get on that plane for the World Cup — it’s been good to see what the others have done as well.

“But to compare myself now to the likes of [Phil] Foden, [Marc] Guehi, Morgan [Gibbs-White], Conor [Gallagher], or those kinds of boys, as a Premier League player, wouldn’t do justice to what they’ve achieved.

“Maybe after a season, if I play enough games and get good minutes under my belt in the Premier League, I can say I’m in that category.”
