Former Miss Howard University reprises her role on ‘A Different World’

A returning A Different World cast member also has a royal lineage. Karen Malina White, who played Charmaine Brown on the original broadcast of A Different World, is set to return in the Netflix sequel series to A Different World. White is an alumna of Howard University and served as Miss Howard University in 1986.

White is prolific for several of her roles across film and TV. She started her career after her HBCU experience, playing Kenesha Carter in the legendary movie Lean on Me. She then began her portrayal of Charmaine Brown, first on The Cosby Show, then on the later seasons of A Different World. White continued her acting career, then landed a role as Nicolette Vandross in the Malcolm Jamal Warner- and Eddie Griffin-led sitcom Malcolm & Eddie. White then secured another defining role that many across several generations might recognize her for.

White plays the character of Dijonay in the legendary Disney cartoon The Proud Family. The Proud Family initially ran from 2001 to 2006 before being reprised in 2022 as The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, where she returned as Dijonay. She now returns to Hillman, another character that both defined her career and allowed her to give back to HBCUs in a huge way.

In an interview with HBCU White House in 2022, she spoke about her experience on the original A Different World.

A Different World was just really, really amazing…that show brought me out to LA. And so it was such a treat, and because, I’m a Howard U Bison graduate. I was Miss Howard University in 1986. And, attending Howard was just very pivotal in terms of my own craft and nurturing me. It was so special. And to be, get to be on shows that I had watched, [The Cosby Show] and A Different World…it was really a dream come true…it’s an honor.”
