Fever’s Caitlin Clark shares true feelings on looming opener vs. Wings

The WNBA season is about to begin, and the Indiana Fever have a season opener against the Dallas Wings on May 9. It will be Caitlin Clark’s first regular-season contest since July 15, 2025, when she suffered a season-ending groin injury. On Tuesday, Clark opened up about how she is approaching the first game of the campaign.

While talking with media members after practice, the 24-year-old guard admitted that the season opener can be exciting and nerve-racking, according to Angela Moryan of WISH-TV News in Indiana. Although that may be true, Clark understands she can’t let the moment become too big to handle to ensure she plays well for the Fever.

“Opening Day can feel so big and so daunting, and it means so much,” said Clark… “But you can’t blow it out of proportion. Like, you want to prepare the exact same way… By the time you get to Game 40, we’re probably all gonna look back and not even remember who we played on our opening night.

“I think you just take it game by game. That’s how you approach things. This one is just as important as the next, but you remain focused on the one right in front of you.”

Caitlin Clark certainly hopes for a successful season in 2026 after struggling with injuries throughout the 2025 campaign. On top of the season-ending groin injury, the former No. 1 pick also dealt with a left ankle sprain, along with two separate left quad strains. She was limited to just 13 games, averaging 16.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 8.8 assists, and 1.6 steals per contest while shooting 36.7% from the field and 27.9% from deep.

The three-year veteran will step in as one of the starting options in the Fever’s backcourt in the season opener against the Wings on Saturday. It should be a fun match-up, as she is facing off against Paige Bueckers, who is also a former No. 1 overall pick.
