Phillies sign former Guardians LHP to minor league contract
The Philadelphia Phillies signed left-hander Kolby Allard to a minor league contract Thursday, adding the 28-year-old southpaw as pitching depth for Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Allard had recently opted out of a minor league deal with the Cleveland Guardians before rejoining Philadelphia, an organization he also pitched for during the 2024 season.
At Triple-A Columbus this year, Allard worked in eight appearances, including five starts, compiling a 4.11 ERA over 30 2/3 innings. He also recorded a 1.14 WHIP along with a 28/9 strikeout-to-walk ratio. His strikeout rate stood at 22.4%, while his walk rate was 7.2%, and he generated ground balls on 45.3% of balls in play.
Allard’s season with Cleveland included a short major league run in which he made four relief appearances and logged a 10.38 ERA across 8 2/3 innings. He was designated for assignment on April 13, optioned to Columbus on April 16, and re-signed on a minor league deal the following day. He was later released on May 17 but remained with Columbus until his final appearance on June 14.
Over his Triple-A run with the Guardians organization, Allard also showed flexibility as both a starter and reliever, finishing 2-0 in eight appearances. His recent decision to opt out followed his stretch in Columbus, after which he returned to free agency before landing back with the Phillies.
In the majors last season, Allard finished with a 2.63 ERA over 65 innings in 2024 with Cleveland, alongside 42 strikeouts and 14 walks. However, underlying indicators included a 3.54 FIP and 4.41 SIERA. For his MLB career, he carries a 5.47 ERA across parts of nine seasons.
Philadelphia’s pitching depth context includes uncertainty in the back of the rotation, with several internal options and recent roster moves influencing the staff. Allard now joins the Phillies as a non-roster option with experience in both the majors and Triple-A.
