Fabio Wardley’s team ‘seeking explanation’ over ‘referee errors’ in Daniel Dubois fight

Fabio Wardley’s team are reportedly disappointed with the level of officiating in Saturday’s all-British showdown with Daniel Dubois.

Wardley had Dubois on the canvas twice in the opening three rounds but was eventually stopped in the 11th stanza as he dropped his WBO heavyweight crown.

According to Sky Sports, Team Wardley felt referee Howard Foster should have taken stronger action against Dubois for ‘multiple low blows and headbutts’.

They are also seeking an explanation from the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) as to why Foster stepped in ten seconds before the end of the seventh round after Wardley landed a flurry of big shots.

This comes after Wardley’s trainer, Ben Davison, praised Foster for his handling of the bout during a statement released on Sunday.

Both Davison and Foster have come under fire in the aftermath of the fight for not pulling Wardley out sooner.

The Ipswich puncher was out on his feet at the end of the ninth round and stumbled as he got off his stool for the tenth.

Ben Davison’s statement

Taking to social media to respond to the backlash, Davison wrote: “Firstly, congrats to Dubois.

“Two tremendous warriors in a modern-day classic. We are super proud of Fabio.

“I actually agree the fight could of [sic] been stopped earlier.

“I did not see Fabio stumble before walking over to the doctor at the start of round ten.

“By which time he had gone over and seen the doctor and seemed much steadier on his legs, which is what we saw.

“It’s such a difficult job to not only find a balance but to strike at the right time when your guy is responsive and firing back.

“I’ve seen mixed opinions on this one, but I agree it could of [sic] been stopped earlier.

“However, with that said, I think Howard Foster got it bang on from his terms.”

Latest on Wardley’s condition

Wardley suffered a nasty gash above his nose and a swollen right eye during the gruelling contest.

He was taken to the hospital after the final bell, where he had stitches put in, before being released.
