Even Mets’ Carlos Mendoza was impressed by ‘unreal’ Brazil-Haiti World Cup atmosphere

World Cup fever has surrounded the United States with plenty of excitement throughout the nation. New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza is no stranger to this after witnessing Brazil’s match against Haiti on June 19.

Over a week has passed since the 2026 FIFA World Cup began, seeing incredible results as it progresses through the group stage. One of those matches featured Brazil and Haiti as the two squads faced each other in Philadelphia. The Brazilians went on to win 3-0 after getting goals from Matheus Cunha (twice) and Vinicius Jr.

Mendoza had the privilege of watching the match, getting to experience the atmosphere alongside the fans. He spoke to media about those moments the following day, having immense praise for what he enjoyed throughout the game.

“It was unbelievable. Growing up in Venezuela, I always cheered for Brazil, to be honest with you. It was fun for the first time I got to watch a World Cup,” Mendoza said.

How Carlos Mendoza, Mets performed against Phillies

Carlos Mendoza will certainly cherish the time he had with experiencing a World Cup match in person. However, he and the Mets went through a brutal display in Game 2 against the Phillies, falling in a 15-3 blowout.

Philadelphia landed a big punch on the Mets bullpen, jumping out to an 11-0 lead after three innings. New York got on the board in the fourth inning, but the offense was unable to help the team recover from the poor start, seeing Philadelphia breeze past them in the middle contest.

New York fell to a 34-42 record on the season, remaining at the bottom of the NL East Division standings. They are behind the Miami Marlins and the Washington Nationals at the moment.

The Mets will look to bounce back in their series finale against the Phillies. The contest is set for June 21 as first pitch happens at 7:20 p.m. ET.
