MIAMI – With the Miami Heat preparing for its fourth straight play-in tournament appearance, there’s no denying how disappointing that fate is, as many on the team were vocal about wanting to avoid the tourney. Still, nothing can change their postseason trajectory as the Heat look to get through the play-in tourney, but it hasn’t been all bad as head coach Erik Spoelstra goes over the major highlights of the season.

The first one that would come to mind for anybody is when Miami star Bam Adebayo scored a historic 83 points on March 10 against the Washington Wizards, marking the second-highest scoring game in NBA history.

However, Spoelstra goes away from the obvious and expresses the “significant highlight” as the development of the team’s young players, such as Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and others.

“I think that’s the one highlight of our…there’s many, but there’s one significant highlight of our season…it was the development of our young guys and the guys that have been in the rotation for us, Pelle [Larsson], Kel’el [Ware], Jaime [Jaquez], Myron [Gardner] has gotten his opportunities. [Keshad Johnson] played really well the other night, but he’s been making great strides in his time in Sioux Falls; he’s really improved in two years. But Trevor [Keels] has really improved quite a bit as a shooter,” Spoelstra said before Miami’s regular season-finale against the Atlanta Hawks.

“Vlad [Goldin] has really improved, he’s a really unique player that you just have to look at with an open lens,” Spoelstra continued. “So you’re happy when guys commit to the program, they get better. We want them to achieve their dreams. We want to be dream makers in every way possible that we can as these guys, hopefully, can really contribute and help us win.”

A look at the Heat’s young players who have developed this season

One of the players Spoelstra mentioned that recently was elevated to a standard deal was Heat guard Jahmir Young, who has been a two-way player for the majority of the season, but got the step-up after the team waived Terry Rozier.

Young has been impressive at the G League level, as he was recognized by the league, being on the All-NBA G League second team with his time on the Sioux Falls Skyforce.

“[Young] had a terrific year for us in Sioux Falls,” Spoelstra said. “If you look at some of the stat lines, they’re amazing, but he’s a unique player, because he’s so shifty, you can’t really get a handle on him. And then the games that he played, our offense looked very good. There’s consistency to it. There’s a motor, you can keep guys involved, and obviously, he’s also a scoring guard.”

As for the other players Spoelstra mentioned, Jaquez has ascended in his third season after a sophomore slump, with him being a heavy contender for the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year. He’s been averaging 15.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game while shooting 50.3 percent from the field.

The 2024 first and second-round draft picks in Kel’el Ware and Pelle Larsson, respectively, have also taken steps up in their second years, as while the center’s season has been tumultuous, there has been improvement in many areas. Larsson has even started for the Heat in 50 games, giving them productive minutes on both ends of the floor.

At any rate, the Heat’s young players, along with their top stars, look to make an impact in the play-in tournament, as they take on the Charlotte Hornets in the first game in the tourney on either Tuesday or Wednesday.
