England take on Costa Rica tonight on the eve of the World Cup in their final match of their Florida warm-up camp before they head to Kansas for their base for (hopefully) the next six weeks of the summer.

Costa Rica head to Florida without having qualified for this summer’s World Cup, despite having reached five of six previous editions of the tournament this century.

Los Ticos finished third in their World Cup qualifying group containing Haiti, Honduras and Nicaragua, only winning one of their six matches, which saw them miss out on punching their ticket to a first ever World Cup appearance on their home continent.

Fernando Batista was appointed as Costa Rica’s new manager in February this year, the Argentinian having previously managed Venezuela as well as several Argentine youth national teams, and has currently gone winless across his three matches in his new job.

The side drew 2-2 with Jordan and lost 5-0 to Iran as part of a mini tournament in Turkey in March to kick off his managerial career with the Central American nation, before falling to a 3-1 defeat to Colombia in Bogota last week, as part of the Colombia’s World Cup preparations.

England and Costa Rica have met before on just two previous occasions, drawing 0-0 in a 2014 World Cup group match in Brazil, before the Three Lions ran out 2-0 winners in a pre 2018 World Cup friendly in Leeds.
