England face carnage as World Cup opponents take matters into their own hands

England will face Mexico on their own turf at the World Cup and it is already apparent just how nightmarish that will be.

Mexican fans launched a wild attempt to disrupt Ecuador’s preparations prior to their Round of 32 clash.

The two sides met at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Tuesday night.

However, hours before kick-off, hundreds of Mexico fans gathered outside their opponents’ team hotel.

Footage from the street showed car horns and motorcycle engines being used in a bid to wake the players up.

Others were even seen playing trumpets as they created a raucous atmosphere outside the hotel.

According to local reports, the Ecuador players were even spotted peaking out of their windows during the commotion.

It came ahead of their match in the capital city and Mexico went on to win 2-0 thanks to goals from Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez.

Mexico will now face England at the Estadio Azteca this weekend.

Thomas Tuchel’s side could be met with the same pre-match scenes after they advanced to the last 16 with a comeback 2-1 win over DR Congo in Atlanta.

Pre-match disruption

Ecuador’s build-up to the match had earlier been disrupted before they had even arrived in Mexico.

Manager Sebastian Beccacece revealed during his pre-match press conference that they had been delayed by over three hours during their journey.

The squad had been scheduled to arrive in the country at 5pm local time on Monday.

However, they instead completed their journey at 8.20pm, with Beccacece unsure of the reasons for the delay.

Ecuador have been based in Columbus, Ohio during the tournament so far.

Their hotel for the World Cup is located over 2,000 miles from the Estadio Azteca.

History beckons

As for Mexico, they ended a 40-year wait to win a World Cup knockout match.

The co-hosts had not won a match beyond the group stage since the 1986 finals, which were also on home soil.

Mexico will hope to claim another quickfire knockout win when they welcome England to their fortress at the Azteca.
