It prolongs the former US Open champion’s two-month absence from the WTA Tour after battling a post-viral infection.

Raducanu has not played competitively since losing to Amanda Anisimova at Indian Wells on March 8.

According to The Times, the 23-year-old could have been fined up to £11,000 for not fulfilling her mandatory media requirements in Rome.

However, she has avoided the sanction despite withdrawing from the tournament, which began on Monday.

The 27th seed had been replaced in the main draw by lucky loser Lilli Tagger.

Raducanu’s absence from the Italian Open comes three weeks before the French Open gets underway.

Meanwhile, she is now at risk of missing out on a place amongst the seeds at Roland Garros.

The second Grand Slam tournament of the year will begin in Paris on Monday, May 25.

When could Raducanu play next?

Ahead of the French Open, Raducanu is now targeting an appearance at next week’s WTA 500 event in Strasbourg, France.

The report adds that the world No.30 is looking to secure a wildcard entry into the draw.

Ekaterina Alexandrova will be the top seed at the Internationaux de Strasbourg, which begins on Sunday, May 17.

The tournament will conclude just two days before the start of the French Open main draw.

Raducanu could require a deep run at the event in order to be seeded in Paris.

She was handed a wildcard entry into the tournament 12 months ago.

Having beaten sixth seed Daria Kasatkina in the first round, Raducanu was beaten by eventual semi-finalist Danielle Collins in the last 16.

It marks her only previous appearance at the clay-court event, which serves as a warm-up for the French Open.

Meanwhile, both of her previous appearances at Roland Garros have ended in the second round in 2022 and 2025.

Whilst she was unseeded last year, Raducanu was the 12th seed at the tournament back in 2022 following her US Open triumph eight months earlier.
