Eagles DC Vic Fangio takes shot at Phillies for firing Rob Thomson

Philadelphia sports is in a bit of a rut right now. The Philadelphia Eagles struggled in the regular season and were eliminated in the first round of the NFL playoffs. The 76ers fared a little better, but they were swept in the second round of the NBA playoffs. The Phillies, after struggling to start the year, fired manager Rob Thomson, but are still nursing a .500 record.

There’s at least one Philly fan who’s not a fan of the Phillies’ decision to fire Rob Thomson: Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. As he was ending his press conference, Fangio expressed his disappointment with the Phillies and their decision to fire Thomson.

The Phillies started the 2026 season with a 9-19 record, a far cry from their usual performances over the last few years. Because of the Phillies’ underperformance, general manager Dave Dombrowski made the decision to fire Thomson. Thomson was the replacement for Joe Girardi in 2022, helping lead the team to an NL title that same year. Since then, though, the Phillies have not experienced the same success. The awful start to the season was the final straw for the team.

Fangio and the Eagles are hoping to avoid the same slow start that plagued the Phillies this season. Their title defense season did not go according to plan, though most of the blame did not lie on Fangio’s defense. Instead, it was the Eagles’ offense that struggled to get going, with offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo getting a ton of flak for his uninspiring schemes last year. The Phillies did make it to the postseason, but were eliminated by the short-handed San Francisco 49ers in the Wild Card round.

The Eagles will have some stiff competition in 2026, especially with how the current NFC landscape is shaping up. A lot of the teams from last season have improved mightily or kept the same core that won it all last season. Will Fangio’s defense be able to clamp these new up-and-coming powerhouses?
