Duke’s Jon Scheyer gets transfer portal win with 6-foot-9 double-digit scorer
The Duke basketball team is picking up the pieces after losing in heartbreaking fashion to UConn, in the 2026 NCAA tournament. Duke is getting some good news on Sunday, as the Blue Devils are picking up a major talent in the transfer portal.
“Belmont transfer Drew Scharnowski has announced he’s committed to Duke,” college basketball reporter Sam Kayser posted on X, formerly Twitter. “The 6-foot-9 sophomore out of Burlington, Illinois averaged 10.7 PPG, 6.0 RPG, 2.6 APG and 1.3 BPG this season.”
Scharnowski played the past two seasons at Belmont. He started 26 total games, so he will give the Blue Devils some experience heading into the 2026-27 campaign. He averaged 8.3 points total in those two seasons, but saw a marked improvement in his production from year 1 to year 2.
Duke also got some more good news in recent days as it was announced star freshman Cayden Boozer would return for next season.
Duke hopes to get to another Final Four with Jon Scheyer as head coach
Scheyer is moving on from the team’s bizarre loss to UConn in the Elite Eight. UConn famously made a fabulous play forcing a turnover, before hitting the game-winning shot with less than a second remaining in that game.
Duke has some major talent coming in with the next recruiting class. That includes five-star high school player Cameron Williams, a power forward. Williams is listed as the no. 3 overall recruit in the 2026 class, per 247Sports.
“Williams is a rapidly ascending prospect with a wealth of long-term tools, and while he is not yet a finished product by any means, he has one of the higher long-term upsides in the class. Now standing at 6-foot-11 with shoes on, he has mobility, athleticism, budding face-up skill, and defensive versatility alike,” 247 recruiting analyst Adam Finkelstein wrote for the outlet.
Scharnowski is the first transfer to commit to Duke. Time will tell if the Blue Devils can reach another Final Four with this new crop of talent.
