Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani home run caps off insane 9-run 1st inning vs. Angels

On Saturday, the reigning World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers improved their regular season record to 42-23 with a resounding 9-2 victory over their nearby rival Los Angeles Angels at Dodger Stadium, their 18th win in their last 23 games and fifth straight over the Angels, whom they have outscored 41-5.

And it was an offensive outburst in the first inning of the game that paced the Dodgers offense, scoring all nine runs during that frame. The inning was capped by a two-run blast from All-Star designated hitter Shohei Ohtani, who is now up to 11 home runs and 35 RBI so far this season.

It was a rough first inning for Angels starter Jack Kochanowitz, who allowed seven runs — six earned — and six hits. Meanwhile, Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto retired 22 straight Angels batters and allowed just two hits in the eight innings he pitched.

The Dodgers came out swinging in the bottom of the first inning, stringing together six consecutive hits and sending 12 batters to the plate during a relentless offensive outburst. By the time the inning ended, Los Angeles had piled up nine runs despite recording just one out, overwhelming the Angels right from the get-go. It marked the franchise’s highest-scoring inning since July 2, 2021, when the Dodgers also pushed across nine runs in a game against Washington during a dominant stretch that season.

The Dodgers, who have an eight-game divisional lead over the second-place San Diego Padres, and the Angels will conclude their series on Sunday afternoon at Dodger Stadium, with the first pitch scheduled to take place at 4:10 p.m. PST.
