Dodgers rumors: Dalton Rushing trade possibility gets honest reality

The Los Angeles Dodgers are the best team in baseball right now. They are performing at a high level once again in 2026 and have won back-to-back World Series championships. Nevertheless, Los Angeles is always looking for ways to improve. Would the Dodgers consider trading catcher Dalton Rushing for a superstar ahead of the deadline this season? According to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal, LA is unlikely to move the former top prospect, something he said during an appearance on Foul Territory.

“He (Rushing) is in a position, like a lot of young Dodgers players have been in the past few years, where he’d be better off elsewhere,” Rosenthal said. “Doesn’t mean the Dodgers feel he’d be better off elsewhere. And when I say better off, he’d get more playing time elsewhere. The Dodgers, I’m sure, see this as ‘we’re one Will Smith injury away from really needing Dalton Rushing, and why would we trade him when we’re in that position and we have Rushing contributing as he is in a part-time role?'”

Rushing has made the most of his opportunities in 2026 with the Dodgers. He has only appeared in eight games, but Rushing is hitting .444/.464/1.296 during that span. Rushing has seven home runs in only 28 plate appearances.

He is clearly ready for a full-time role. The problem is that the Dodgers do not have an open spot for him. Will Smith and Freddie Freeman are handling duties at catcher and first base, which are the only positions in the field Rushing has spent time at this season. He also rarely receives designated hitter opportunities with Shohei Ohtani being the DH most games.

“So, what’s best for Dalton Rushing in terms of his career, might not be best for the Dodgers,” Rosenthal continued. “I guess at the deadline, sure, anything is possible, but I can’t see the Dodgers entertaining this unless it was a major deal, unless they were getting something huge in return. I’m not sure what that would be at this point. Catching is extremely valuable.”

Dalton Rushing likely won’t be traded this season. As Rosenthal said, however, anything is certainly possible at the trade deadline.
