Reporter says quiet part out loud about Dodgers’ recent struggles

The Los Angeles Dodgers are still very much expected to top the National League West and make the MLB playoffs when the regular season is all said and done. But there have been causes for concern of late, with the two-time defending World Series champions running into a lull.

The Dodgers were swept in a three-game series by the Atlanta Braves toward the end of August before winning two of three meetings with the Detroit Tigers.

However, they lost the first two games of their current series against the St. Louis Cardinals at Dodger Stadium, and that has Katie Woo of The Athletic seemingly wondering when Los Angeles can get back to its top form.

“And this felt like a get-right series for Los Angeles. Instead, it has pretty much pointed any optimism that we had coming into the new month back towards the August level of how we felt about this club. So going 1-for-18 with runners in scoring position last night, they left 13 runners on base. You just can’t do that against any club, regardless of record.

And when you’re comparing these two teams, the Cardinals took advantage of those opportunities. The Dodgers did not. Not a well-pitched game by Eric Lauer on Tuesday. [It] was a well-pitched game up until the sixth inning by [Yoshinobu] Yamamoto on Wednesday. And then it just became a matter of who could cash in and who couldn’t. So the Cardinals have completely outplayed the Dodgers in the last two games. And it’s not what you want for a team that has said it’s September. It’s time to step on the gas. We haven’t really seen a lot of that.”

Any team can go through a slump, and the Dodgers are not immune to it, either. They surely can still get it together, which could start as soon as Thursday night, with LA and St. Louis playing the finale of the series.
