Dodgers’ perfect trade offer for Red Sox’s Jarren Duran
It has been a disastrous season for the Boston Red Sox. After making the American League playoffs a year ago and having the blueprint for a dominant pitching staff, the Red Sox have not looked anything like a team that has designs of going back to the postseason this year.
With the calendar about to move into June, the Red Sox are in last place in the American League East. They have struggled to put runs on the board all season and the team’s lack of power has been shocking. The Red Sox had a rare easy victory Saturday over the Cleveland Guardians. However, all that 9-1 triumph did was improve their record to 24-33. The Red Sox are a shocking 9-19 at Fenway Park.
They fired manager Alex Cora earlier in the year, they have seen ace pitcher Garrett Crochet sidelined with a dead arm since late April. They have also been without young phenom Roman Anthony due to a wrist injury. There are reasons the Red Sox have struggled, but they failed to enhance the team in the offseason.
They were unable to hold on to team leader and third baseman Alex Bregman. The Red Sox failed to reel in former New York Mets slugged Pete Alonso. He signed with the Baltimore Orioles, the last-place finisher in the American League East a year ago. They also failed to make a serious bid for slugger Kyle Schwarber, even though he had excelled in his half season with the Red Sox in 2021 and was also a fan favorite.
The idea that the Red Sox will rebound over the last 100-plus games is unrealistic. They don’t need to tear down the team, but a trade of Jarren Duran makes sense.
Duran should have superb value on the trade front
There are a number of teams that could use Duran on their roster. He is one of the fastest outfielders in either league and he is one of the most explosive base runners in the game. If Duran hits a ground single to the outfield, he is a major threat to turn that into a hustle double.
He is an elite base stealer who can get an excellent jump on most pitchers and does an outstanding job of avoiding the tag. While he did not have a great start to the season, he has been hot in recent weeks and has been able to hit the ball out of the park with some frequency. He hit his ninth home run of the season in the victory over the Guardians — a 3-run shot in the ninth inning — and he has his eight home runs in May.
Duran is slashing .214/.278/.383 with 32 runs batted in and 10 stolen bases. He has not been caught once. He was the Most Valuable Player in the 2024 All-Star Game when he hit the game-winning home run for the American League, and he has the potential to be a difference maker for a contending team if the Red Sox trade him.
Dodgers could be a significant trade partner

The Los Angeles Dodgers are the best fit for him. The New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs could both use Duran as a left fielder, but the chance of the Red Sox sending one of their most exciting players to their archrivals in the AL East is unrealistic.
The Cubs could also use a player with Duran’s all-around ability in left field, but they don’t appear to have the kind of attractive talent to complete the deal. The Cubs have some top minor league prospects they could offer. That’s not enough. A player with Duran’s resume needs to be traded for a Major League headliner.
The Dodgers have the talent to make a solid offer for Duran. The two-time defending World Series champions are favored to gain a third consecutive title. Duran would enhance their chances.
Long ball hitter needed at Fenway Park
The Red Sox are in desperate need of a home run slugger. The player that would appear to fit their needs best on the Los Angeles roster is Teoscar Hernandez.
Hernandez recently strained a hamstring, but the injury is Grade 1. He is expected to return to the lineup in the middle of June. Hernandez is a former member of the Toronto Blue Jays, and the Red Sox made a bid for him before he signed with the Dodgers prior to the 2024 season.
When Hernandez was with the Blue Jays, he frequently punished the Red Sox. He was especially dangerous in the games at Fenway Park. Hernandez has hit between 25 and 33 home runs in each of the last five seasons. He would be a consistent long ball threat in the Red Sox lineup.
If the Red Sox decide to trade Duran, they should send him to the Dodgers and a acquire a key slugger like Hernandez. He would give the team some much-needed power and make them much tougher to beat throughout the remainder of the season.
