Dodgers DFA veteran infielder to make room for Tommy Edman
The Los Angeles Dodgers are preparing for the second game of their three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays. They’ll have some extra reinforcements heading into battle.
The Dodgers have reinstated infielder/outfielder Tommy Edman from the injured list, the team announced. In turn, infielder Santiago Espinal has been designated for assignment.
Edman has been out all season as he recovers from offseason ankle injury. Manager Dave Roberts said he expects him back in the lineup for Wednesday’s matchup, via Dodgers Insider. Assuming not setbacks arise, Edman will now play a crucial role in Los Angeles’ quest for their third-straight World Series title.
Perhaps his best attribute is his versatility. Since joining MLB in 2019, Edman has played all three outfield positions as well as every spot on the infield except first base. Manager Dave Roberts will be able to be creative in how he uses him.
At the same time, Edman is no slouch in the batter’s box. His numbers have been down the past two seasons, as his streak of three straight seasons with 20+ stolen bases ended in 2023. Still, Edman hit 13 home runs, driving in 49 total during the 2025 season. He will be an asset for Los Angeles’ lineup.
On Wednesday, Dodgers fans will have their first opportunity to see Edman donning his Dodgers jersey again. He’ll be walking into a prime situation, as the team’s 46-27 record gives them an eight-game lead in the NL West.
Edman may not draw as much buzz as Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts. But the Dodgers will now rely on him to be another crucial bat in their playoff push.
