Dodgers’ Dave Roberts shares crucial Will Smith injury update

The Los Angeles Dodgers have been rolling right along recently, despite their various injury issues, recently picking up two straight wins to start their series against the Tampa Bay Rays. The Dodgers currently sit with a record of 47-27, good for first place in the NL West by a country mile.

One injury situation to keep an eye on is that of catcher Will Smith, who is currently on the injured list with a neck injury.

Now, manager Dave Roberts has shared a crucial update on Smith’s status moving forward.

“Dave Roberts said Will Smith is ‘unlikely’ to return when eligible on Friday. Beyond that is TBD. He went through a full day of work yesterday, but neck is bothering him a bit. Roberts said they’re trying to get him to a place where he won’t regress before returning,” reported Jack Harris of the California Post on X, formerly Twitter.

Neck injuries certainly aren’t anything to play around with, so it’s understandable that the Dodgers are being cautious in their appraoch to bringing Smith back into the lineup. Smith had been having a strong season prior to the injury, and made one of the most iconic plays in Dodgers history last fall when he hit the go-ahead home run in extra innings in Game 7 of the World Series against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Unfortunately, Smith isn’t the only injury that the Dodgers have had to deal with this year, as pitchers Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, Edwin Diaz, and more have all missed extensive time. However, the insane amount of depth that Los Angeles has stockpiled over the years with their various spending frenzies has allowed the team to more than hold down the fort despite those absences.

Los Angeles will continue its series against the Rays on Wednesday at home.
