Day 1 of Patriots’ Drake Maye-A.J. Brown connection should already have opponents scared

The New England Patriots didn’t stop improving this offseason despite making a run to the Super Bowl last year. They added one of the best wide receivers in football this offseason in A.J. Brown, making a blockbuster trade with the Philadelphia Eagles to add him to the equation.

Now, the Patriots have their feet on the ground at mandatory minicamp as they get ready to defend their AFC crown. On day one of minicamp on Tuesday, Brown was already building a frightening connection with star quarterback Drake Maye.

Maye and Brown already hooked up for a touchdown that Patriots reporter Greg A. Bedard of Boston Sports Journal called “unstoppable.”

“Drake Maye, in two red zone periods, was 20 of 23 with at least 3 TDs (Brown, Stevenson, Henry),” Bedard wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Was 1 of 2 on back-shoulder passes to Brown. The first was a thing of beauty and unstoppable. Impressive.”

Patriots fans should expect to see a lot more of that this coming season. Brown is a dominant force on the outside, which he has shown time and time again during his career with the Tennessee Titans and the Eagles so far. Maye is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL at throwing outside the numbers and down the field, making this a perfect match.

If Brown does bring his best football into 2026 and beyond, the Patriots offense will be nearly impossible to stop. Maye very nearly won the NFL MVP award in just his second season in 2025, and he did that with Stefon Diggs as his top wideout. With all due respect to Diggs, Brown is a whole different beast.

The addition of Brown has led to Kayshon Boutte, who was Maye’s most dangerous downfield target in 2025, seeing his name thrown in trade rumors. The two have been playing together in the offense so far this offseason, but it remains to be seen whether that duo remains into the season or not.

Regardless, expect Brown to have a major impact on what should be one of the top passing games in the NFL this fall.
