Darts star was offered old job after World Championship nightmare

Cameron Menzies revealed his ongoing struggles in darts prompted him to look for work outside of the sport.

The Scot walked away from his plumbing trade in 2025 to give darts his full attention.

Menzies made the brave decision after claiming his second PDC ranking title.

Menzies’ difficult start to the year

However, he ended the year on a sour note at the World Darts Championship with a loss to Charlie Manby in the first round.

Following the defeat, Menzies sustained serious injuries to his hand after he punched a table on stage.

Menzies later apologised for bringing the sport into disrepute, but his form continued to tail off.

Outside of a run to the semi-finals of the International Darts Open, Menzies is yet to progress beyond the third round at a PDC European Tour event this year.

He has also battled away throughout the Players Championship, with a run to the fourth round at an event in April marking his best finish.

The struggles at the oche ultimately got to a point where Menzies seriously reconsidered his future in the sport.

Menzies had ‘two or three’ phone calls for jobs

“It’s just because I wasn’t playing well,” Menzies said.

“I even started my CV again on Indeed, that’s how bad it was.

“I had CVs out there anyway, but I put a few out and got two or three phone calls for jobs.

“My old supervisor that I used to work for even offered me a job. If I wanted to, he would give me my job back, no problem.

“There have been options for that, but the last two or three months have been progress.

“It was starting to get me down but now I am mentally good.”

Despite his darting woes, Menzies showed his capacity to shake off his troubles at the oche with an impressive run at the World Cup of Darts for Scotland alongside two-time world champion Gary Anderson.

Together, the duo went all the way to the semi-finals, where they were beaten by eventual champions England.

How hypnotherapy helped Menzies

Menzies revealed his improved fortunes at the dartboard and away from it was down to undergoing hypnotherapy.

“It’s helping me massively not just with my mental state of darts but it’s to do with life as well.

“So I used to really struggle with flying. I used to get so worked up. I am still not a massive fan of it but I don’t get so anxious about it.

“Even with life and trying to get too much done at once it helps you solve problems one at a time.

“It has been a massive help for me. It’s something I thought I never would have tried until it happened.

“I feel calmer on stage now because I am enjoying it more.

“I had the fear of maybe not being able to perform, so now I am trying to enjoy the moments because I know how easy it is to lose it all.”

Menzies’ focus is now on securing a spot at the World Matchplay in Blackpool, with the tournament beginning on July 18.
