Daniel Jones left disappointed by Colts’ denial of bold Achilles injury rehab request
The Indianapolis Colts went all in on Daniel Jones this offseason. Indy retained Jones on a two-year contract despite his major Achilles injury from the 2025 season. Recent reporting suggests that Jones is a bit frustrated with the pace of his injury rehab at this point in the offseason.
ESPN’s Stephen Holder explained just how careful Indy is being with their franchise quarterback in a recent article.
“Quarterback Daniel Jones was denied in his bid to take the next step in his recovery. He took his best shot at getting approval to engage in full-team drills during this week’s mandatory minicamp, but prudence prevailed and the Colts decided against putting their rehabbing quarterback in harm’s way.”
Jones told ESPN that he asked for approval, but clearly it was not granted.
But that does not mean Jones is not making progress. In fact, Jones was cleared to participate in seven-on-seven drills last week. Colts head coach Shane Steichen called it a huge development.
“We’ll keep that trend going, probably through the end of OTAs and then, obviously, get him into team stuff at training camp. It’s spring, we don’t play for a while, so we’ve got to be smart with his injury. But he’s making great progress,” Steichen said.
The Colts are still pushing the envelope with Jones’ recovery even if they are holding him back from full-team drills.
“Although he’s still limited to 7-on-7 drills, the Colts are taking steps to measure his preparedness and recovery,” Holder added. “Among the tools they’re using: a series of analytical measurements such as the velocity on his throws and strength tests comparing his left lower leg with his right, where he sustained the injury.”
It will be interesting to see how involved Jones becomes during training camp later this summer.
