Dak Prescott lends support as ex-Cowboys star blows nearly $80m after retirement: ‘Come talk to me’

Terrell Owens is a Pro Football Hall of Famer.

The former NFL wide receiver was one of the most electric wide receivers of his generation, and in a career that spanned 15 years with five teams, Owens recorded 15,934 receiving yards and 153 touchdowns.

Playing for the likes of the San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles, and Dallas Cowboys, alongside the fame came the money.

But not even the big bucks lasts forever, and Owens found that out the hard way.

Despite having made just shy of $80 million during his NFL career, the 52-year-old’s financial troubles have been well documented in recent years.

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott – who is the second-highest paid at his position in the league – has lent his support to America’s Team’s former star wideout.

“That’s sad to hear,” Prescott said on Saturday, in response to a reporter who brought up Owens’ struggles. “I mean, I’m sorry. I’m stuck on that more than anything.

“I just encourage guys to find people that they trust and talk to people. … And if you don’t know if there’s somebody you can trust, come talk to me, and I can show you somebody that I can trust.

“I think we all kind of need that, to have somebody like that in your corner. Because, when you have it, you can’t spend it fast. So, just unfortunate to hear that.

“I mean, I’d ask any of my teammates, and I guess I probably should echo in the locker room if they’re struggling with that or need help in finding somebody who can help them.”

So where did the money go?

Well over the years, Owens himself has admitted that he didn’t invest his money wisely, agreeing to risky business ventures that his very own financial managers advised.

“It goes fast,” Owens admitted at Front Office Sports’ ‘Huddle in the Hamptons’ back in July. “One day it was like, what happened to my $80 million? If I was just a 10-year guy who wasn’t a Hall of Famer, honestly I’d be struggling.”

The five-time First-Team All-Pro also revealed that in order to combat his losses, he has had to sell various properties he once owned, which has interfered with his mortgages and child support funds.

“I hate myself for letting this happen,” he said in an interview with GQ in 2012.

“I believed they had my back when they said, ‘You take care of the football, and we’ll do the rest.’ And in the end, they just basically stole from me.”

But after having learned his lessons, Owens finds himself in a much better position and has advice for other NFL players out there, who are on bigger money contracts than ever before.

“My advice to any fan or athlete out there: Just don’t live beyond your means,” Owens told NerdWallet, via CNBC, in 2018. “At that time I got sucked into wanting to be like everybody else, the guys with the Mercedes and all the flashy cars and the jewellery.

” I think those are some of the most idiotic purchases I think players can do, especially when they don’t have that money in the bank account to really pay for that stuff.

“Second, don’t trust just anyone with your money, including financial advisers, because not everyone is looking out for your best interest. If you do get help, make sure to stay in the loop and understand what’s happening.”
