Czechia vs Denmark predictions
The Republic of Ireland had their hearts broken last Thursday, but for Czechia it was a wonderful night.
It did not start well for Miroslav Koubek’s team, however. A quarter of the way through their play-off semi-final, Czechia found themselves 2-0 down at home.
They did not let their heads drop, however. It was crucial that Czechia quickly halved the deficit through Patrick Schick, but it took them until the 86th minute to restore parity.
With neither team able to score the decisive fifth goal of the game in extra time, the tie was decided on penalties.
Matej Kovar saved Alan Browne’s effort for Ireland, allowing Jan Kliment to step up and score the winning spot-kick to send the crowd wild at the Fortuna Arena in Prague.
“It was a battle,” the veteran Czech coach Koubek said afterwards. “I said it would be a war and a war it was, with a happy ending for us. I believe this first step will make us stronger.”
Denmark had a more comfortable experience in their semi-final. They did not manage to break through in the first half against North Macedonia, but four goals after the break brought them a 4-0 victory.
Whereas Czechia were realistically targeting second place in their qualification group, which was won by Croatia as expected, Denmark were widely fancied to reach the World Cup automatically.
However, Scotland’s dramatic 4-2 victory over the Danes on the final matchday saw Steve Clarke’s side win the group instead, thus consigning Denmark to the play-offs.
Brian Riemer’s team did a good job of dusting themselves down after that disappointment and going again in their clash with North Macedonia.
“I think the two halves were similar,” Riemer said of his side’s showing. “The only difference was that we scored the goals after the break. I think we did a lot of things right before the break. We were patient; we had a lot of good runs. We were close and almost there.
“My message to the players at half-time, where we made small adjustments, was to keep the pace. We went into half-time in a good place and knew we would wear them down if we kept the pace.”
This will be a trickier test, though. For one, Czechia are a stronger, more experienced and more resilient outfit than North Macedonia. Secondly, Denmark do not have home advantage this time.
Czechia vs Denmark betting tips
Will Czechia or Denmark qualify for the World Cup in Prague on Tuesday evening?
Danes to triumph
Denmark probably hit their peak in modern times when they reached the semi-finals of Euro 2020.
They have not enjoyed as much success since then, as their second-place finish in their World Cup qualification group demonstrates.
Yet Denmark have more quality at their disposal than Czechia and that is likely to make the difference in this do-or-die contest.
Czechia are a functional, physical side and they are certainly capable of giving Denmark something to think about.
But if Riemer’s men play the football they are able to, the away team should triumph in this one.
Go for Denmark to win at 19/20 with Sky Bet
Second-half away goal
Czechia may have scored the only goal of the second period against the Republic of Ireland, but they huffed and puffed with minimal success for most of the half.
Denmark, on the other hand, were relentless in the second half against North Macedonia, during which time they scored four goals.
Of course, past performance does not guarantee future results. We might not see the same pattern on Tuesday.
However, it is easy enough to envisage a scenario where Czechia hold out in the first half, before Denmark come on strong after the break as the hosts start to tire.
Tip Denmark to score over 0.5 goals in the second half at 8/11 with SBK
Hojlund can strike
Rasmus Hojlund did not get on the scoresheet against North Macedonia, but we like his chances of doing so at Stadion Letna.
Hojlund had a tough time at Manchester United, but he has hardly been alone in that regard in recent seasons.
The striker has shown his quality on loan at Napoli, where he has rebuilt his confidence after scoring 14 goals in 37 games in all competitions.
With Hojlund set to lead the line once more against Czechia, we are backing him to find the back of the net in this decisive tie.
Choose Rasmus Hojlund to score any time at 9/5 with Ladbrokes
