Brazil World Cup 2026 squad: Lineup and tactics for Japan

Having won more World Cups than any other nation, Brazil are always one of the favourites and they are once again among the most hotly tipped to win World Cup 2026. The samba stars beat Haiti and Scotland 3-0 to top their group after a poor showing in matchday 1.

The famous yellow jerseys are chasing a record sixth trophy – which has eluded them since their most recent triumph in 2002. They hope the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti as manager – winner of five Champions League titles – will inspire the current crop.

Brazil’s front four are as dangerous as any in the tournament, with Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior finally beginning to discover his Real Madrid form in the famous yellow and green shirt, scoring four times in three group stage games – including a moment of magic to haul the Seleção level against Morocco. Vini Jr and Manchester United’s Matheus Cunha have scored all of Brazil’s seven goals so far.

They do, however, look a little light in midfield, with Casemiro and Bruno Guimarães the main two options. With one or two question marks being raised as to how deep this Brazil squad can actually go in this World Cup, a win over an impressive Japan in the Round of 32 would send out a statement.

Brazil World Cup 2026 squad and predicted lineup: key takeaways

  • Matheus Cunha has won the battle against Brentford’s Igor Thiago to start up top, after the latter came from nowhere to begin the tournament as Brazil’s first-choice striker. Cunha was given the nod for the Haiti game, and scored twice. He then added another against Scotland.
  • Casemiro and full back Danilo are both past their physical peak, making Brazil vulnerable in transition against quick, counter-attacking sides – such as their next opponent Japan – which is worth factoring into handicap and goals markets for their tougher knockout fixtures.
  • Alisson overcame his fitness concerns to start in goal, and there doesn’t appear to be any concern as to him remaining between the sticks for the rest of the tournament. Ederson – formerly of Man City – would step up if required.
  • Vinícius Júnior‘s international record has improved since the start of the tournament, but he is yet to have that signature moment in a knockout game for Brazil. It’s worth exercising caution when backing him in individual scoring markets, despite his status as one of the best club players in the world.
  • Morocco in Group C represented Brazil’s most dangerous fixture, and while they struggled for large parts, they emerged with a point. It is perhaps no coincidence an Ancelotti team looks more ‘Italian’ in structure and is difficult to score against.

Carlo Ancelotti enters international stage

It has been a turbulent time for Brazil since World Cup 2018. Fernando Diniz struggled to transfer his approach from Fluminense to international football, while Dorival Júnior was unable to make the step up.

Eventually Brazil persuaded Carlo Ancelotti to take the reins having spent years attempting to appoint him.

Ancelotti has won five Champions Leagues, so this is a coach who knows how to negotiate knockout tournaments. The experienced Italian is also renowned for his man-management.

Prediction for Head Coach

Ancelotti’s track record speaks for itself, but Brazilian fans will not care about his past achievements if he fails to deliver this summer.

However, the Seleção are a stronger proposition with Ancelotti in the dugout compared to Diniz or Dorival. Ancelotti is known for adapting his approach for each and every opponent, and that has already been in evidence in this tournament.

The star player: Vinícius Júnior

Even with Neymar still making it into another squad, Brazil’s all-time record goalscorer will not be in the starting 11. Vinícius Júnior is their go-to pick on the left wing these days, and Ancelotti showed at Real Madrid that he knows how to get the best out of the former Flamengo man.

Vinícius’ record for Brazil is distinctly mediocre, though: just 13 goals in 52 appearances, although he has netted 4 in 3 in this tournament so far. Now is the time for the 25-year-old to come alive for his country.

Prediction for Star Player

Vinícius is under pressure to deliver for Brazil, whose supporters have been waiting to see the Real Madrid version of the forward. He has played well for much of 2026, so he arrives at the World Cup in a confident mood – making him a central figure for Brazil when it comes to World Cup betting predictions. That could make a difference.

How Brazil lined up against Scotland

Ancelotti switched up the formation again, after reverting to a traditional 4-4-2 against Haiti, he went back to the 4-3-3 against Scotland.

There was a first start of the tournament for Bournemouth winger Rayan, who became the first teenager to start for the Seleção at a World Cup since Marcos Antonio in 1970. Matheus Cunha, following his brace, was once again preferred to Igor Thiago up top.

Brazil began to create a lot more chances, although Scotland’s errors at the back certainly helped. The South Americans led 2-0 at the break and were rarely threatened.

How to bet on the Brazil World Cup squad

There are specific betting markets relevant to the Brazil starting XI for World Cup 2026.

One of the most popular is the anytime goalscorer market. Brazil’s four-pronged attack means opponents will have to deal with multiple threats at once, but Vinícius Júnior – with two in two – is their most likely contender for the Golden Boot or, at least, to be the team’s top scorer.

Another market to focus on is cards. Casemiro is a tenacious performer who is not as mobile as he was at his peak, so he will no doubt find himself in the referee’s notebook at least once. The Arsenal centre-back Gabriel Magalhães is another good option here.

Is there a chance of Brazil winning World Cup?

Yes, Brazil are a genuine second-tier contender rather than a long shot, with their World Cup odds sitting around 14/1 on the outright market, just behind the France, Spain, Argentina and England group.

As five-time winners with the richest title history in the game, they carry the pedigree and attacking talent to threaten anyone. The reason their world cup odds aren’t shorter is a run of tournament disappointments, no final since 2002 despite repeatedly arriving as favourites, plus question marks over whether this generation can finally deliver.

FAQ about the 2026 Brazil World Cup squad

1. How many times have Brazil won the World Cup?

Brazil have lifted the World Cup trophy five times, making them the most successful national team in the history of the competition. They got their hands on the prize for the first time in 1958, then retained it four years later.

Brazil also went all the way in 1970, 1994 and 2002, but they have not advanced beyond the quarter-finals on foreign soil since then.

2. Which players are injured and missing from the starting 11?

Chelsea youngster Estêvão was hoping to make his World Cup debut this summer, but was ruled out of the tournament with a torn hamstring.

In defence, Éder Militão is also absent after he suffered the same injury. His Real Madrid team-mate Rodrygo is sidelined for the rest of the year with a torn ACL and meniscus.

3. Are there any changes to Brazil’s usual starting 11?

The Brazil starting 11 has undergone substantial changes since their last major tournament outing, the 2024 Copa America.

In the quarter-final against Uruguay, João Gomes, Guilherme Arana, and Endrick all featured from the first whistle, but only the latter has made this squad – and he’s only likely to get minutes from the bench.
