Cubs match MLB history not seen since 1955 with second 10-game win streak
The Chicago Cubs continued their winning ways Friday night, taking down the Texas Rangers 7-1 to complete their second 10-game winning streak of the season. In doing so, Chicago matched a rare MLB feat last accomplished in 1955 by the Brooklyn Dodgers, who also produced two 10-game streaks within the first 39 games of a season, according to Sportradar.
The Cubs (27-12) have now won 20 of their last 23 games, with a three-game slump separating their two double-digit winning runs. It’s the first time since 1935 that Chicago has produced two 10-game winning streaks in a single season. Historically, the North Siders have only surpassed this total once, recording four such streaks in 1906.
Ian Happ played a pivotal role once again, extending his on-base streak to 29 consecutive games. He opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first inning and later walked and scored in the third inning. Happ’s streak is the longest by a Cubs player since Bryan LaHair reached base in 30 straight games in 2012, and currently trails only Nick Kurtz’s 31-game active league-best streak.
Seiya Suzuki added to the offense with a two-run home run, his seventh of the season, while Michael Busch came through with a three-run double in the seventh inning to stretch the advantage.
On the mound, Chicago’s pitching staff kept things in control with a well-orchestrated effort. Ben Brown, transitioning from bullpen duties into a starting role due to Matthew Boyd’s injury absence, threw four hitless innings with three strikeouts and one walk. Javier Assad earned the win, allowing just one hit across 3 2/3 scoreless innings. Three additional relievers helped limit Texas to only two hits overall.
The Rangers’ only run came in the fifth inning via Justin Foscue’s RBI single, their first hit of the game. Texas has now dropped eight of its last 11 contests.
The Cubs’ run have placed them among rare company in MLB history. They are only the fifth team ever to post multiple 10-game winning streaks before their 40th game of a season, joining elite clubs including the 1941 St. Louis Cardinals and 1955 Dodgers.
