Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs shockingly gets released ahead of Week 18
The Dallas Cowboys made a stunning roster move Tuesday, releasing cornerback Trevon Diggs just days before the regular-season finale.
ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported the decision on X, formerly Twitter, following Dallas’ Week 17 win over the Washington Commanders on Christmas Day.
“Cowboys have released cornerback Trevon Diggs, per ESPN @toddarcher,” Schefter wrote. “He goes through the waiver process and if unclaimed, he will be a free agent.”
The move comes as the Cowboys enter Week 18 with a 7-8-1 record and prepare to face the New York Giants (3-13) on Sunday at MetLife Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET on FOX.
Cowboys signal reset by releasing Trevon Diggs before finale
Diggs’ release marks a dramatic end to a turbulent season between the All-Pro cornerback and the organization. He has not appeared in a game since Week 6, when Dallas lost 30-27 to the Carolina Panthers. Despite being activated from injured reserve in recent weeks, Diggs never returned to the field, fueling speculation about internal tension and his long-term future with the franchise.
Dallas enters the season finale outside the playoff picture, and the decision to move on from Diggs underscores the team’s shifting priorities as it closes out a disappointing campaign. If Diggs clears waivers, he will become an unrestricted free agent ahead of the offseason.
