Red Sox receive multiple injury updates amid Yankees clash

A successful four-game series versus the New York Yankees will not wash away the pain fans suffered after watching the Boston Red Sox blow two games against the Colorado Rockies just days earlier, nor will it erase all the awful memories from the first half of this extremely disappointing campaign. What it can do, though, is give this club a glimmer of hope heading into July. The latest injury updates could add another one. Romy Gonzalez, Jovani Moran and Nick Sogard are all nearing return, per MLB.com.

Gonzalez could make his season debut in Sunday’s series finale against New York after battling shoulder and hip flexor injuries in the spring. The 29-year-old utility man was an important part of the Sox’s first playoff team since 2021, batting .305 with a .483 slugging percentage and .826 OPS in 341 plate appearances last season. He could provide immediate support in the middle infield, especially since both Trevor Story and Marcelo Mayer are unavailable.

Moran, a left-handed relief pitcher who has logged 23 appearances for Boston since 2025, should not be too far behind Gonzalez. He struck out two batters in a scoreless inning of work for Triple-A Worcester this past Thursday and could rejoin the MLB squad for its home series versus the Washington Nationals, which begins on Monday. Elbow inflammation has kept him sidelined since June 4.

The Red Sox could certainly use some reinforcements in the bullpen, as their relievers continue to squander the momentum their superb starting pitching rotation has built. Jovani Moran has recorded a 3.00 ERA and 38 Ks in 33 innings this season.

Apart from late-game stability, Boston requires players who can get on base and do the little things well. Perhaps Nick Sogard can fulfill those responsibilities when he comes off the injured list. Like Romy Gonzalez, the former 12th-round draft pick can move all around the diamond and produce timely hits. He is 9-for-35 with two doubles, a triple and five walks in 2026. Sogard is expected to start a rehab assignment soon, so more big-league opportunities could be on the horizon.

Can the Sox (35-46) actually reel people back in and generate intrigue for the second half of the season? Garrett Crochet and Roman Anthony still have a ways to go until they return, and the team has to jump seven squads in the American League Wild Card standings. The prognosis is bleak, but it should be a little less so when the unheralded yet effective trio of Romy Gonzalez, Jovani Moran and Nick Sogard are activated in the near future.
