Clemson HC Dabo Swinney rips proposed CFP system that axes conference title games
The College Football Playoff format has been a contentious talking point in recent years, and now it looks like the field is going to be expanded again. After a ton of buzz surrounding a possible 24-team format, the AFCA is now beginning to show support for the 24-team format that would also eliminate conference championship games.
Losing conference title games would be a tough pill for many college football fans to swallow, as championship weekend is one of the most prestigious weekends on the college football calendar, and now it appears it’s going to look a lot different moving forward.
Clemson football head coach Dabo Swinney has never held back his feelings regarding some of the major changes in the sport, and it’s not doing it with this one either. The two-time national champion defended championship weekend on the Always College Football podcast, via On3 Sports.
“I hate to see the championship games go away, but also I get it,” Swinney said. “I played in the first ever championship game, the 1992 SEC Championship Game. I hate to see that go away. I think it’s just awesome to be a part of that. There’s a lot of people out there that want it to go away because they can’t ever get to it.”
Swinney and Clemson have had a ton of success in ACC Championship Games during his time as the head coach there. Swinney has led the Tigers to eight conference titles, including five in a row from 2015-19.
However, as the College Football Playoff has continued to expand, all of the focus on the postseason has become about qualifying for the final bracket in the best shape possible. Playing in a conference title game, an extra game on the schedule, has been viewed as a disadvantage by some.
Now, it looks like all of that is potentially going away with the proposed 24-team playoff coming into effect sooner rather than later.
